Course Description

The Electrical Vehicle Technology unit provides learners with a comprehensive introduction to the systems, components, and principles underpinning the operation of electric and hybrid electric vehicles. It is designed to build core knowledge and practical skills aligned with current industry needs and technological developments.

Learners will explore electric and hybrid vehicle layouts, drivetrain configurations, and the interaction between key systems including batteries, motors, inverters, converters, and on-board chargers. The unit also covers high-voltage cabling and safety systems, with an emphasis on equipotential bonding, interlocks, and diagnostic procedures.

Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on sessions, students will analyse the function and integration of auxiliary systems such as regenerative braking, HVAC, and electric steering. Emphasis is placed on structured troubleshooting approaches to common EV challenges and fault scenarios.

This unit contributes directly to preparing learners for further studies or employment in the EV sector by fostering problem-solving ability, technical competence, and a strong awareness of evolving electric mobility technologies.

Overall Learning Outcomes:

LO1 Identify and analyse electric vehicle layouts to distinguish between different electric vehicle configurations, and the operational principles underlying hybrid electric vehicle layouts.

LO2 Recognise hybrid electric vehicle systems such as classifications, operation, configurations, and hybrid control systems.

LO3 Apply principles of high voltage cables, equipotential connections and interconnection lines within electric vehicle architectures.

LO4 Analyse and describe essential components of electric vehicles, including batteries, motors, relays, control units, on-board chargers, isolators, DC to DC converters, and battery management controllers.

LO5

Evaluate auxiliary systems in electric vehicles such as heating and air conditioning, brakes, and power-assisted steering, understanding their integration and operation within electric vehicle architectures, and their impact on overall vehicle performance and efficiency.

LO6 Analyse, troubleshoot, and solve challenges related to electric vehicle technology
