Description

Course Description

Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly transforming the automotive industry, creating a growing demand for professionals with up-to-date knowledge of emerging transport technologies. A clear understanding of their types, principles, and impacts is essential for anyone entering this dynamic field. This unit introduces learners to the key technological, economic and social dimensions of electric and hybrid vehicles, providing a foundational understanding of this fast-evolving field.

The unit introduces learners to the key aspects of electric vehicles, tracing their development, exploring the different types of EVs currently available, focusing on their specific features, advantages, and market relevance.

Special emphasis is placed on the core components and operational principles of EV technology, including propulsion systems, energy storage, and key sub-systems. Learners will examine practical considerations such as ownership costs, charging networks, and battery life cycles. Broader implications - such as electricity demand, infrastructure needs, emissions reduction, environmental impact and end-of-life vehicle management - are thoroughly examined. In addition, students will investigate emerging technologies and anticipated future developments, including self-driving vehicles and infrastructure evolution, while reflecting on how electric mobility affects individuals, communities, and global sustainability goals.

This unit equips learners with essential knowledge and critical thinking skills to navigate the evolving field of electric mobility. By engaging with real-world case studies and industry developments, students will deepen their understanding and develop the practical, analytical skills needed to address current challenges and drive future innovation.
