Description

Course Description:

If one is an English speaker, he or she is already at an advantage when it comes to learning German. This is because German and English share the same Germanic roots. Consequently, there are thousands of words which are closely related known as -‚Å“cognates-‚ . For example the English chin is Kinn in German. Water becomes Wasser and father turns into Vater. Hence, those who started learning this language might have realised that German is not particularly hard after all!

This unit is aimed towards those who already have basic knowledge of the German language and would like to expand their vocabulary and develop their language skills. Learners will practice the four language skills (listening, reading, writing & speaking) in a meaningful context, based on everyday-life situations. In other words, this unit entails topics on how to function in social life by being able to carry out simple transactions in stores, post offices or banks; knowing how to get simple travel information; using public transport; asking for basic information, asking and explaining how to get to places and buy tickets; as well as ordering everyday goods and services in German. Moreover, it also delves into the cultural aspects of the country and gives an insight on how feasts such as Christmas and Easter are typically celebrated in Germany and other German speaking countries.
