Course Description
Chinese is the language with the biggest number of speakers and one of the official languages of the United Nations. The teaching and learning of Chinese is increasing worldwide: apart from learners of Chinese descent in the various ChinaTowns around the world, many non-Chinese people are choosing to learn Mandarin Chinese for various reasons such as travel, for business, for translation, cultural intermediation or to learn a new language. Chinese is the only entirely logographic language still in use today and its scrip has over 3,000 years of history.
This study unit is designed for beginner learners of Chinese who have no prior knowledge of the language. The study unit will be delivered with a learner-centred communicative approach and will train learners on the four linguistic skills: speaking, writing, reading and listening. In addition to language proficiency in Chinese, the study unit will also expose learners to cultural knowledge about China thus enabling them to interact with other speakers of Chinese in a culturally appropriate way.
