Description

Course Description

This unit introduces learners to modern fabrication technologies used across various craft and industrial fields, including metalwork, textiles, woodworking, digital fabrication, and other creative disciplines. Learners will gain a basic understanding of what modern technology is, where it is used, and how it supports practical work in different sectors. The unit focuses on additive manufacturing (3D printing) and simple subtractive or cutting technologies, allowing learners to carry out hands-on tasks in a safe, supervised environment.

This unit is designed to be highly practical and engaging, emphasising fun, creativity, exploration, and confidence building. Learners use ready-made digital files that are widely available and accessible, making the technology easy to work with regardless of learners’ digital experience. No programming or complex design work is required.

Modern Techniques and Equipment is designed as a stand-alone unit suitable for learners entering at Level 1. It also provides foundational exposure for those who later progress to Modern Techniques and Equipment II.
