Course Description

This unit provides learners with a comprehensive introduction to the traditional craft of gilding, focusing on the fundamental principles, materials, and safe working practices needed to carry out basic gilding tasks. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands on practical activities, learners will explore the historical context of gilding, the characteristics of different gilding materials, and the essential tools required to achieve high quality decorative finishes.

Learners will develop an understanding of various gilding methods, including surface preparation, adhesive application, and the handling and laying of metal leaf. Emphasis is placed on mastering core techniques such as applying adhesive sizes, managing leaf sheets, and achieving smooth and even coverage on a range of surfaces. The unit also introduces learners to commonly used materials such as gold leaf, imitation leaf, gilding pastes, and sealants, ensuring they gain familiarity with both traditional and contemporary products.

Health and safety form an integral part of the learning experience. Learners will be taught correct workshop practices, safe handling of delicate materials, appropriate use of ventilation, and the importance of maintaining clean, controlled working conditions to ensure successful gilding outcomes.

By the end of the unit, learners will have built the confidence and competence to carry out simple gilding tasks independently. They will understand how to select suitable tools and materials for different applications, troubleshoot common issues, and produce decorative gilded finishes that meet basic craft standards. These foundational skills can serve as a stepping stone to more advanced gilding techniques or further study within related craft, restoration, or decorative arts fields
