Description

Course Description

This introductory unit is designed to help learners to develop basic skills in goldsmithing, focusing on design and making of gold and jewellery pieces. Learners will explore historical and theoretical knowledge about gold, goldsmithing tools, workshop setup, safety procedures and basic goldsmithing techniques such as wire and plate making, cutting, soldering, stone setting and polishing while aiming to design a personal project.

With the ultimate goal of creating a piece of modern art-designed jewellery, the unit focuses on the practical applications of goldsmithing processes, such as in the jewellery industry and decorative arts.

Learners will learn how to securely utilize a variety of goldsmithing tools, including the sawblade, forge, tongs, hammers, pliers, forming and shaping tools, drilling tools, and polishing buffer machines, through hands-on workshop sessions. They will also be urged to familiarize themselves with the correct Maltese and English terminology for instruments, procedures, and safety measures.

It includes core English and Maltese skills (such appropriate terminology and basic communication tasks like writing an email seeking supplies), as well as basic mathematical skills (like measurement, geometry, and bending allowance). It is presented in a workshop setting with hands-on, in-person instruction.

Overall Learning Outcomes

LO3 Exhibit fundamental goldsmithing skills, including soldering, bending, cutting, polishing, and basic design.
