Overall rationale and objectives
This course covers the training recommendations by IMO assembly resolution A.703 on training of Radio Operators related to the General Operator’s Certificate (GOC). The course meets the Radio Regulations 2012 and the STCW Code.
The objectives are for a trainee to successfully complete the training on the use of GMDSS equipment required to be fitted on vessels sailing within A1, A2, A3 and A4 sea areas. By successfully passing the prescribed examination, the designated radio operator will have the primary responsibility for radio communications during distress, urgency, safety and routine incidents.

LO1: Distinguish between different type of GMDSS equipment and their main functions
LO2: Recognise radio regulations and the International SOLAS convention
LO3: Interpret frequency ranges of every GMDSS equipment and operate respective radio equipment
LO4: Identify maritime radio stations

There are no strict prerequisites for entry.
This course requires a basic knowledge of radio communication practice and a working knowledge of written and spoken English. Candidates are assumed to have basic computer skills in order to participate in the course.
