The course is of 38 Hours over 10 Days
In this course students will become familiar with the following:
Applied Mathematics and Physics (including calculations):
- Consumption of oil and fuel
- Area and circumference of circle
- Volumes of rectangular and circular cross-section tanks
- Speed and range of vessels
- Weights and measures
- Conversion and fractions to decimals
- Simple levers
- Load, stress on bolts, factor of safety
Engineering Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the general arrangement of commercial vessels, watertight integrity
- Operation and maintenance of marine internal combustion engines
- Operation and maintenance of auxiliary machinery systems, including steering gear and refrigeration systems
- Operation, testing and maintenance of electrical and control equipment
- Maintenance of deck equipment and machinery
- Detection of machinery malfunction and repair procedures
- Organisation of safe maintenance and repair procedures
- Understanding the effect of free surface on the stability of vessel
- Fire prevention, detection and extinction systems
- Knowledge, care and maintenance of safety and survival equipment found on board vessels
- Regulations and procedures to be observed regarding operational or accidental pollution of the marine environment and methods and aids to prevent such pollution
- Function and use of life saving appliances
- Dealing with emergencies in machinery spaces
- Damage control. Action to be taken in the event of flooding
- Knowledge of safe working practices
- Working knowledge and application of the Code of Practice for the Safety of Commercial Vessels including survey and certification requirements
- Routine duties relating to engine room watch keeping
- Compilation of Machinery space logbook and record keeping
Applicant must be 19 years of age, have at least 24 months appropriate sea service on vessels of not less than 200KW and be in possession of a General Purpose Hand Certificate. Applicant may only apply for this course after being in possession of a Transport Malta Notice of Eligibility to attend the course and final examination
To be issued with the Engine Driver Grade 1 licence from Transport Malta, applicants should have completed the following courses:
- STCW Medical First Aid Certificate
- STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility Certificate
Subject to the completion of the additional requirements, licence will be issued by Transport Malta
Oral and Practical Assessment at the end of the course
Course notes are included in course fee
On completion of the course qualified candidates can serve as Engine Driver on a commercial vessel of less than 1, 500KW, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta
