Medical First Aid

Course Description

The course is 32 Hours duration

In this course students will become familiar with Medical First Aid on board Merchant vessels

• • Immediate action

• • First-aid Kit

• • Body structure and function

• • Toxicological hazards aboard ship

• • Examination of patient

• • Spinal injuries

• • Burns, scalds, and effects of heat and cold

• • Fractures, dislocations and muscular injuries

• • Medical care of rescues persons, including distress

• • Hypothermia and cold exposure

• • Radio medical advice

• • Pharmacology

• • Sterilization

• • Cardiac arrest, drowning and asphyxia

• • Psychological / psychiatric problems

Applicants should be 16 years of age, be in possession of an STCW Elementary First Aid Certificate. Applicant must be Medically and Physically Fit

An MCAST Certificate will be awarded to those students who have attended 80% and more of the lectures and passed the examinations

Practical and written assessments at the end of the course
