Course Description
Ceramics-Introduction is an open workshop suitable for participants from any professional background with no experience in ceramics.
This course explores the basics of clay as a creative and functional medium. Students will learn about ceramics through making, encouraging an intuitive engagement with the material.
Learners will gain basic skills in ceramic hand-building and surface decoration whilst exploring a diverse range of art styles and design opportunities. This studio practice will ensure a complete ceramic workshop experience starting from design work, modelling, decoration, underglaze, and/or glazing to the final stage of firing.
Learners will discover a variety of hand-building techniques, including Pinching, Slab construction, Coil construction, and surface decoration techniques such as Slip Combing, Faceting, and Stamping. As well as practical skills, this course will provide learners with basic theoretical knowledge of ceramics technology and science contextualised in a sociohistorical timeframe.
To obtain more valuable insight into the art of ceramics, learners will be given the opportunity to discuss their studio results in class and receive professional guidance on their future artistic projects.
Finally, Ceramics-Introduction aims at promoting the art of ceramics across the local scene by making ceramics enjoyable as well as approachable.
A body of finalised work created by end of the course will include 2 fired pinch pots, 2 fired coiling pots and 1 fired slab building pot.
Students will be asked to come to the 2nd lesson equipped with the below:
– Earthenware Clay
– 2 containers: one small and one medium-sized
– Pen & sketchbook
– Basic pottery kit (optional)
– Big plastic bag
– Engobes (any 2 colours)
– Untextured cloth
– Any mark-making tools
– Masking tape
– Apron
