Course Description

Open Studio is a non-accredited unit that serves students who are enrolled in the Award in Ceramics – Intermediate:

Wheel Throwing unit so that they can reserve wheel time outside of contact hours and complete the self-learning

hours necessary to be eligible for a certification of achievement. Open Studio is also for students who have completed Ceramics -Introduction and would like to continue their ceramics practice in a supportive environment. Open Studio will be available to students who have a background in ceramics, who have taken ceramics courses previously and would like to use the ceramics studio for their own

projects.

 

Ceramics – Open Studio is a self-guided unit providing students with a supportive environment with access to tools,

clay, kiln and expert guidance. Students develop their own projects during class sessions.

At the start of the course, students will have an in-depth tour of the studio, an introduction to the equipment and a

review of how to use and maintain the space including set up of workspace and cleaning. The remainder of the unit

is self-guided. The lecturer may demonstrate certain skills and tools relevant to student’s project however, the main

role of the lecturer is to be available for individual support, as needed.

 

Overall Leaming Outcomes

LO 1 Foster independent learning in a ceramics studio:

LO 2 Practice problem-solving and critical thinking during the creative process.

LO 3 Experiment with new forms and shapes using hand building techniques.

LO 4 Effectively utilize studio equipment and resources

 

Minimum suggested entry requirements

  • Prior knowledge and experience in handling clay, specifically hand-building techniques is required.
  • Accepted certification includes:
  • Ceramics – Introduction certificate of attendance
  • OR equivalent certificate in ceramics (this must be submitted to ICA prior to unit registration)
  • SA in Fine Art
  • Advanced Diploma in Art and Design
  • Diploma in Art and Design

In place of certification, a portfolio may be submitted for review by Open Studio lecturer prior to registration
