Description

Course Description

This study unit introduces learners to the traditional Maltese craft of weaving, locally known as Newl. Learners will explore the history and cultural significance of weaving in Malta, while developing foundational technical skills using both frame and table looms. Emphasis is placed on identifying basic tools and materials, understanding the weaving process, and executing simple patterns.

Learners will begin learning to weave using cardboard and frame looms. Basic techniques such as plain weave and tapestry weave will be taught, enabling them to create items such as coasters, bookmarks, and landscape designs. Learners will also learn to name the tools and equipment in both English and Maltese, read about local artisans, and use mathematics to calculate quantities and measurements for their projects.

Learners will apply traditional techniques to produce small woven samples and a personal project, while reflecting on their craftsmanship and creativity.
