Course Description

This unit introduces learners how to the fundamental skills required for creating garmets and soft furnishings using simple tools and sewing machines.‚   Learners will develop practical skills in cutting fabric according to patterns, sewing basic clothes and interior items, and assemblish pieces into finishes products‚   Emphasis is placed on working safely with requipment and understanding the function and names of tools and machines parts in both English and Maltese.

Learners will also apply basic mathematical skills to measure, count, and plan sewing tasks accurately. Through step-by-step demonstrations and guided practice, learners gain hands-on experience while building confidence and independence in completing sewing projects. To contextualize learning, the unit includes a visit to a local fashion studio or garment factory, allowing learners to observe how clothes are designed and produced professionally.

By the end of the unit, learners will compile a small portfolio showcasing their completed projects and reflections on their learning.‚   ‚  This portfolio demonstrates their understanding of basic sewing techniques, safe use of tools, and ability to follow patterns, providing both a practical record of skills acquired and a foundation for further study in textile and fashion-related areas.

  • Recognise how basic pattern shapes fit together in sewing.
  • Use simple measurements and calculations to cut and sew fabric correctly.
  • Evaluate own finished work to identify areas of success and improvement.

 

Method of Assessment

Garment Construction Portfolio

Students document the full process of creating a garment, including sewing samples and garments / projects.

Highlights technical understanding of sewing methods.

Students to develop a sewn sample and convert it into a finished product.

Technical Sewing Skills Assessment

Students demonstrate a good foundation of sewing techniques.

Reflective Report

A written reflection evaluating the creative and technical process
