Description

This is a 60 hr guided learning course.  Students need to invest a further 40 hrs which will include private study and 2 home assignments.

Lessons are held twice a week at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in Paola between 1730 hrs and 2030 hrs.  Each lesson is of 3 hours duration.

The course covers the Practical and Technological aspects on lighting and power circuits of an Electrical Installation according to IEEE Regulations and Requirements. It is intended for students who wish to acquire an understanding of electrical wiring in domestic installations. This course serves as the ideal introduction to the Wireman’s license A course.

Learning Outcome 1: Describe the process of generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy

Unit Content

    • Introduction to generation, transmission and distribution systems in Malta

Learning Outcome 2: Describe the requirements for an electrical installation

Unit Content

    • Colour coding

    • Fuses – current rating, fusing current, fusing factor

    • The Consumer Unit

    • The R.C.D.  Construction, performance and testing.

    • Design of an installation – lighting, power and permanent equipment regulations.

    • Double insulated appliances (importance of earthing). Why D.P switching is imperative.

    • Supply voltages – declared supply voltages. Use of multimeter.

Learning Outcome 3: Identify the different components and devices that make up a domestic electrical installation

Unit Content

    • Domestic electrical accessories

    • Practical exercises on lighting circuits

    • Practical exercises on power circuits:

        1. Radial circuits types A2 and A3 (I.E.E Regulations and requirements)

        1. Duplicate multiple earthing.

        1. Ring circuit type A1 – (I.E.E Regulations + requirements)

        1. Fused spurs

        1. Non-fused spurs

    • Water heaters

    • Cooker unit

    • Construction and diversity regulations

    • Calculations for worked examples of 7.5 kw and 10kw case studies

    • How to determine cable C.S.A and protection

Learning Outcome 4: Demonstrate practical wiring skills for basic electrical systems

Unit Content

    • Installation testing,

        1. using multimeter,

        1. use of insulation and continuity tester (hand driven and electronic type),

        1. use of clamp meter,

        1. use of R.C.D tester,

        1. use of socket outlet tester plug

    • Transformer Principles – construction and testing of a double wound, step-down type, SELV (I.E.E Regulations)

    • Importance of earthing and the different methods as stated by I.E.E. Regulations – special reference to earth electrode

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Pre-requisites:

    • Good Knowledge of English, Basic Mathematics

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

    • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

    • An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria and also choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.

    • Students who opt not to sit for the assessment or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded the MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.

There are no additional costs or special materials/equipment to bring,
