It is intended for students who wish to acquire an understanding of electrical wiring in domestic installations. This course serves as the ideal introduction to the Wireman’s license A course.

Learning Outcome 1: Describe the process of generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy

Unit Content

    • Introduction to generation, transmission and distribution systems in Malta

Learning Outcome 2: Describe the requirements for an electrical installation

Unit Content

    • Colour coding
    • Fuses – current rating, fusing current, fusing factor
    • The Consumer Unit
    • The R.C.D.‚   Construction, performance and testing.
    • Design of an installation – lighting, power and permanent equipment regulations.
    • Double insulated appliances (importance of earthing). Why D.P switching is‚  imperative.
    • Supply voltages – declared supply voltages. Use of multimeter.

Learning Outcome 3: Identify the different components and devices that make up a domestic electrical installation

Unit Content

    • Domestic electrical accessories
    • Practical exercises on lighting circuits
    • Practical exercises on power circuits:
        1. Radial circuits types A2 and A3 (I.E.E Regulations and requirements)

        1. Duplicate multiple earthing.

    • Cooker unit

    • Construction and diversity regulations

    • Calculations for worked examples of 7.5 kw and 10kw case studies

    • How to determine cable C.S.A and protection

Learning Outcome 4: Demonstrate practical wiring skills for basic electrical systems

Unit Content

    • Installation testing,
        1. using multimeter,

        1. use of insulation and continuity tester (hand driven and electronic type),

        1. use of clamp meter,

        1. use of R.C.D tester,

        1. use of socket outlet tester plug

    • Transformer Principles – construction and testing of a double wound, step-down type, SELV (I.E.E Regulations)
    • Importance of earthing and the different methods as stated by I.E.E. Regulations – special reference to earth electrode

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Pre-requisites:

    • Good Knowledge of English, Basic Mathematics

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

    • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement
