Award in Basic Silver Smithing

Course Description

This introductory unit is designed to help students to develop basic skills in silversmithing, focusing on design and making of silver and ornamental pieces. Students will explore historical and theoretical knowledge about silver, silversmithing tools, workshop setup, safety procedures and basic silversmithing techniques such as wire and plate making, cutting, soldering, hammering and polishing while aiming to design a personal project at the end

The unit emphasizes practical applications of silversmithing techniques such as in the decorative arts, home ornamental decor, revitalizing older styles into contemporary, recognition of different techniques with final aim of a contemporary art designed silversmithing project. Amongst projects one will find how to hammer a sheet of metal to form a bowl, silver utensils, metal box forming and others.

Through practical workshop sessions, learners will develop the ability to safely use a range of silversmithing tools like the sawblade, forge, tongs, hammers, pliers, forming and shaping tools, drilling tools and polishing buffer machines. Additionally, they will be encouraged to get familiar with the proper Maltese and English terms for tools, methods, and safety protocols.

Various outings in museums, churches and collections shall also be organized so that the students can get a glimpse of rich silversmithing tradition that is present in our country. Seeing and touching already made precious treasures will enhance the enthusiasm and understanding on producing new products of art.

The unit is intended for students who are 16 years of age or older, particularly those who struggle with learning. It incorporates essential mathematical abilities (such as measuring, geometry, and bending allowance), English, and Maltese (such as proper vocabulary and fundamental communication activities like composing an email requesting materials). It is taught in a workshop format using in-person, practical education.

Overall Learning Outcomes

LO1 Identify common silversmithing tools, their names and safe uses.

LO2 Prepare the melting or soldering area following basic workshop safety procedures.

LO3 Demonstrate basic silversmithing techniques such as basic design, cutting, bending, soldering and polishing

LO4 Reproduce a simple piece using measurement tools to calculate material length required, proportions and thickness

LO5 Communicate using appropriate terminology and basic written formats in English and Maltese.
