Commercial Vessel Engine Driver Grade 3

N.B. Kindly note that applicants will be requested to register for their attendance on Classter. Failure to achieve the full enrolment will entitle the lecturer to exclude student from classes and no certification can be issued. A minimum attendance of 70% is required for certification attainment.

This is a 21 Hour course spread over‚  7 Days

During this course students will become familiar with the following:

Marine Engineering and safe operation for vessels up to 500KW

• • Marine Internal combustion engines and their fittings, shafting and propellers

• • Preparing, start up and shutdown procedures for main propulsion and auxiliary machinery

• • Precautions necessary for the prevention of fire and explosion, including the use of petrol and LP gas

• • Action to be taken in the event of fire or explosion, including the use of fire fighting appliances. Machinery space for fire-fighting arrangements

• • Cooling water and fuel systems, bilge pumping arrangements, including precautions against back flooding

• • Care of electrical systems including batteries. Safety precautions when working on low and medium voltage A.C and D.C systems. Fuses and circuit breakers

• • Steering gear and deck machinery

• • Fuel consumption estimation and calculation

• • Location and rectification of common faults in main machinery, steering systems and auxiliary equipment

• • Precautions to prevent environmental pollution

Applicant must be 18 years of age, have at least 6 months appropriate sea service on vessels of not less than 75KW and be in possession of a General Purpose Hand Certificate. Applicant may only apply for this course after being in possession of a Transport Malta Notice of Eligibility to attend the course and final examination

To be issued with the Engine Driver Grade 3 licence from Transport Malta, applicants should have completed the following courses:

• • A current approved First Aid Certificate

• • An approved Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Certificate

Subject to the completion of the additional requirements, licence will be issued by Transport Malta

Oral and Practical Assessment at the end of the course

Course notes are included in course fee

On completion of the course qualified candidates can serve as Engine Driver on a commercial vessel of less than 500KW, operating within ports, internal and territorial waters of Malta
