Course Description

Combining art history, cultural heritage and museum-based curatorial processes as well as contemporary

curatorial methods including site-specific exhibitions, curating in alternative spaces, curating biennials, this course

offers a broad introduction and critical analysis of the diverse aspects and practices of curating.

Beginning with an understanding of local practices of curating, this course will include site visits to art and cultural

museums, contemporary art galleries and alternative arts exhibition spaces. These visits will be complemented by

in-class discussions, readings of curatorial theories, online lecturers from international curators. With a critical

lens, students will begin to develop their own style and curatorial values to draw on to develop exhibition

concepts.

The culmination of this course will be the presentation of an exhibit ion proposal including concept, artists,

checklist, layout, labels and logistics including budget, loan and commission drafts

 

Overall Learning Outcomes of Programme

  1. Analyse current curatorial practices -locally and internationally – with a critical lens
  2. 2. Distinguish between different curatorial practices including: museum-based curation, site-specific curation, public art curation, gallery curation, etc.
  3. Apply practical skills in curation to a unique exhibition concept including logistical aspects of budget, contracts, checklists, outreach plan as well as layout design and texts.
  1. Develop a personal and/or collaborative curatorial statement.

 

Minimum entry requirements for Programme

Bachelor/Bachelor (hons); In possession of a First Degree at Level 6 or MQF Level S with professional experience is acceptable

This course is aimed at current SA and MA students at leA as well as creative professionals, cultural workers, emerging curators, artists and designers. This course is tailored to individuals who are interested in developing their own curatorial practice and/or gaining experience and broad contextual knowledge in curating in Malta and abroad.
