Description

Generic Unit Description

This introductory unit guides learners in developing basic filigree skills through simple, supervised workshop activities.‚   Learners are introduced to fundamental techniques such as wire twisting, forming outer frames, soldering, refining and polishing.‚   With the goal of creating a personal project at the end, learners will examine theoretical and historical information about the trade, filigree silversmithing tools, workshop setup, safety protocols, and techniques like wire twisting and turning – “Rizzol” (filigree filing wire) for filigree, making silver outer frames, soldering, hammering, and polishing.

The ability to securely utilize a variety of silversmithing equipment for filigree, including the depth gauge, sawblade, tongs, hammers, pliers, forming and shaping tools, drilling tools, and polishing tools, will be developed through hands-on workshop sessions. They will also be urged to learn the correct Maltese and English words for instruments, procedures, and safety measures. Additionally, they will acquire the correct vocabulary to recognize the many Maltese filigree fillings, such as Genwiza, Matta, Doppja matta, Ghajn gorn and Nuccalijiet.

Where possible, visits to museums, churches or workshops may be used to help learners appreciate the cultural and historical context of Maltese filigree. Seeing and interacting with previously created priceless masterpieces will increase one’s passion and comprehension for creating new works of art.

During the course learners will reproduce several artifacts in filigree like the traditional Maltese cross pendant, a butterfly, flower earrings and pendant amongst others. At the end a final simple project by the learners will conclude the course.

This unit integrates core mathematics skills (such measurement, geometry, and bending allowance), English, and Maltese (like appropriate terminology and basic communication tasks like writing an email asking for supplies). Delivery is hands-on, with clear demonstrations, simple instructions and close supervision throughout.
