Course Description

This hands-on course offers a comprehensive foundation in wheel throwing and an in-depth exploration of the skills required.

Participants will learn the essentials of clay preparation, the fundamentals of wheel-throwing techniques, and refining work through trimming and finishing. Additional skills in crafting lids and handles will further enrich the creative journey.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Clay Preparation: Learn the technique of preparing clay for throwing. using essential techniques such as wedging and centering on the wheel.

Wheel Throwing Techniques: ‚  Develop proficiency in crafting basic pottery forms, focusing on bowl and cylinder structures and practicing control on the wheel.

Finishing: Acquire skills in trimming and finishing pots, refining shapes, and adding personal style to your pieces.

Skills in Lid and Handle Creation: Add functionality and character to your pottery designs by crafting lids and handles.

To receive a certificate of achievement in Award in Ceramics -Intermediate: Wheel Throwing, students must also enrol in Ceramics Open Studio, offered simultaneously. During the Ceramics Open Studio unit, students will be able to continue their practice and fulfil their self‚ ·directed learning hours. Without Ceramics Open Studio, students will be eligible for a Certificate of Attendance only.

Overall learning Outcomes of Programme

l01: Prepare clay for throwing, including wedging and centering on the wheel.

L02: Apply basic techniques for wheel throwing to create a bowl and cylinder.

L03: Experiment with trimming and finishing of pots.

L04: Construct lids and handles

Minimum entry requirements for Programme

Ceramics -Introduction certificate of attendance

OR Ceramics Wheel Throwing Workshop

OR equivalent certificate in ceramics (this must be submitted to ICA prior to unit registration)

OR BA in Fine Art, Advanced Diploma in Art and Design, Diploma in Art and Design
