Course Description
Sculpture is a vital artistic discipline that explores three-dimensional form through hands-on engagement with materials and tools. This unit introduces learners to the foundational techniques, materials, and creative processes involved in sculptural practice. By working with mediums such as clay, wood, plaster, and found objects, learners will gain technical skills while developing their own creative voice.
The unit balances technical instruction with opportunities for personal expression and experimentation. Emphasis is placed on understanding the properties of materials, applying safe studio practices, and exploring core sculptural methods such as modeling, carving, assembling, and casting. Learners will also be encouraged to document their creative process through sketchbooks or journals and to engage in basic critique sessions using appropriate art vocabulary.
Rather than producing complex or large-scale works, learners will focus on exploratory projects and small-scale sculptures that allow them to practise essential skills and techniques. Through guided activities, students will be introduced to both traditional and contemporary approaches to sculpture and will be supported in reflecting on their progress and artistic development.
This unit provides a foundation for further study or practice in the visual arts by fostering manual dexterity, visual awareness, and creative problem-solving in a three-dimensional context.
