Course Description

Building a career in the cultural and creative sectors requires an adept understanding of financial planning as well as a thorough knowledge of available funding opportunities, schemes and incentives.

This is a practical unit that addresses the relationship between creative work and financial planning. It will support students to achieve a critical understanding of the principles and practices of fundraising and financial management. It will cover financial support mechanisms – such as exploring and maximising on funding mechanisms and opportunities – sponsorships, financial literacy tools which address the specific realities such as freelancing artists and/or arts organisations, fees and payments, etc. With a lens of sustainability and advocacy of one practice, participants will design their own financial strategy that aligns with their values and goals as arts professionals.

Taking a systematic approach, this course prompts critical evaluation of the existing models of funding within the art world to critically interrogate how different models could support artists’ financial sustainability. This course will analyse the different approaches that have been developed by artists and creative professionals vis-a-vis sustaining their own practices in the long-term.

This course can be a bridge between degree and profession. It is tailored to students who are transitioning from a degree programme as well as for artists and creative practitioners who are seeking a structured course that explores fundraising and financial management in the cultural and creative sectors
