This course is designed for construction personnel who carry out the function of construction site management and are responsible under the Maltese legislation for all the activities that take place on site to complete a construction project.

 

Candidates are expected to bring with them site experience and technical knowledge. This will enable course tutors to expand and lead candidates to apply, analyse and evaluate technical and managerial processes and to identify opportunities for improvement.

 

This is a 120 hrs of guided learning course.  Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

 

Lessons are held as indicated on the prospectus and website.

 

Unit 1-Safety at Construction Sites

 

This unit will emphasize knowledge and important technicalities to provide and maintain a safe working environment. Learners will explore the methods used to identify workplace hazards at construction sites, together with strategies used to control them including the use of risk assessments, monitoring and review procedures.

 

Learning Outcome 1: Identify construction site hazards

 

Unit Content

 

 

    • Construction Site: location, slop, ground conditions

 

    • Environment: wind, storm water, sea conditions, nearby and adjacent buildings

 

    • Boundaries: light fence; barrier fence (boundary walls)

 

    • Nearby buildings: noise, vibrations, dust

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcome 2: Draw risk assessments procedures

 

Unit Content

 

 

    • Appropriate risk assessment reports; hazards that can affect the workplace and surroundings areas; control and precautions to minimize risk; records of periodical assessments;

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcome 3: Understand the specific employers and employees responsibilities

 

Unit Content

 

 

    • Health, safety and welfare requirements and responsibilities needed to comply with current legislation; induction briefings to inform those responsible of their designated duties; notices and procedures to carry out construction projects, records of accident reports; injury reports and records; safety barriers, management of protection clothing and safety equipment: expiry dates, calibration, testing; inspections

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcome 4: Evaluate ‘methods statements’ to identify risk in construction operations

 

Unit Content

 

 

    • Adapt the appropriate working practices to protect working personnel and the public in the short and long term

 

    • Supervise the safe erection, use and dismantling of scaffolding

 

    • Supervise the safe set up and use of ladders and steps in various environments

 

    • Store, and supervise the use of toxic materials

 

    • Keep records of scaffold platforms over 2m high

 

    • Keep records of working practices when in close proximity to site machinery and road traffic

 

    • Keep records of tools and equipment condition – including electric power tools

 

 

 

 

Unit  2- Site Construction Technology

 

This unit enables learners to evaluate the technological details behind construction activities and the importance to carry out an evaluation to identify hazards and solve problems.

 

Learning Outcome1: Evaluate construction methods and adopt appropriate construction procedures

 

Learning Outcome 2: Evaluate hazards arising from construction activities.

 

Learning Outcome 3: Evaluate decommissioning and demolition procedures

 

 

Unit 3 – Site Construction management    

 

This unit is intended to broaden the knowledge of learners on Project management techniques. Besides the standard elements: Initiation, Planning or development, Production or execution, Monitoring and controlling, Closing; this unit emphasis project control processes and short term plans.

 

Learning Outcome 1: Identify and evaluate required materials, machinery and labour for construction projects

 

Unit Content

 

 

    • All resources: machinery, materials, labour – construction methods

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcome 2: Contribute, interpret and evaluate bar charts, networks and schedules

 

Unit Content

 

 

    • Works programme: construction project activities; logical sequence; constrains, resources, tasks; corporate plans; Identify resources and time for each task; critical paths and overall duration; labour needed to the quantities of materials; production progress daily and weekly reviews; Effective supervision of individuals and teams

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcome 3: Assess each phase of a construction project and the related method statement and draws the attention of professional bodies in case of abnormal circumstances

 

 

    • Effective communication skills;

 

 

    • The various roles of managers, technicians, supervisory, craft and general building operatives;

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

 

Pre-Requisites:

 

 

    • Construction Site Experience.

 

    • References by Civil Engineers and Contractors

 

    • Mason Building License

 

 

Entry Requirements</em>;

 

 

    • Functional Skills in the English Language/ Analytical Skills

 

    • Level 3 qualification related to Construction Industry

 

 

 

 

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

 

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

 

 

    • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

 

 

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

 

 

    • An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria AND ALSO choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.

 

 

    • Students who opt not to sit for the assessment/s or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded an MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

 

 

 

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.
