Course Description

This course is an Intermediate Level programme in basic Jewellery design as a three-dimensional art form. Additionally, this course explores various materials, techniques and art concepts in jewellery design and small-scale metal artworks.

The course will introduce the student to the fundamental techniques used to make jewellery and small-scale artworks using copper, brass, and silver metals and how to create a portfolio of work and design.

The student will learn how to use various tools such as torches, jewellery saws, hammers, drills, pliers, cutting tools, doming block and punches, pendant motors, rolling mills, draw bench and draw plates, and polishing and burnishing tools.

In addition, the student will learn how to make mathematical calculations related to alloying metal (hallmarking), alloying fine gold and silver with other base metals to obtain the same permitted standards in varying colours such as reddish gold, white gold, and yellowish/red gold. The student will also learn about improving, reducing and mixing different finesses of gold and silver, as well as recovery of gold and fine silver from scrap precious metals.

The course delves in the proper understanding of Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Regulations (Legal Notice 147 of 2004), as amended by Legal notices 181 and 186 of 2006, 467 of 2007, 105 of 2008, 426 of 2012 and ACT VII of 2011.

Students enrolled in the course will be working within a group and sharing workshop facilities with other learners.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the rules and Health & Safety regulations of the workshop, while collaborating safely within the workshop environment.
  2. Use appropriately various processes, techniques, materials, tools, equipment and machinery in the Jewellery workshop.
  3. Produce test pieces/prototypes/final works, making use of a range of skills through a creative problem-solving process, using different materials, techniques and processes.
  4. Present a professional portfolio and documentation of works as proof of an increasingly personalised expression, displaying advanced technical skills.
