Entry Requirements: School leaving Certificate. Basic knowledge of Biology

 

Study Programme Description:

This award is made up of three separate modules each of which teaches various skills and competences required by someone working in the position of Assistant Veterinary Technical Officer to undertake their day-to-day duties in a professional manner. The different modules delve into various subjects ranging from the writing of reports to the foundations of veterinary services legislation, animal health, protocols followed by such officers on a livestock farm and health and safety topics.

Experts in the filed will deliver these units, ensuring that the necessary competences are passed for the learners to be able to perform their duties in an appropriate and correct manner.

  2. Recognise major principles of veterinary services legislation
  3. Explain protocols and procedures followed by technical officers on a livestock farm
  4. Appraise the importance of maintaining health and safety measures during day-to-day work

Study Programme Structure:

This award consists of three modules with a summative assessment for each unit. The following are the learning outcomes for each unit.

 

Module 1: Principles of Animal Legislation and Health & Safety

MQF Level 3;

Number of contact hours – 30 Guided Learning Hours

Total Learning Hours – 125 hrs

Number of credits – 5 ECTS

This unit provides the basis upon which the work of the assistant veterinary technical officer is based. It introduces and goes into detail on the legislations associated with veterinary services and livestock husbandry and slaughter and health and safety and explains how the officer needs to abide by such legislation in the line of duty. Furthermore, the unit explains the protocols that need to be followed for different inspections and in various scenarios encountered by these officers and how common difficult situations should be tackled. The unit ends with a discussion on how a basic risk assessment of a site is undertaken to prevent dangerous situations from arising.

 

Module 1 – Learning Outcomes
Discuss the basic provisions and implications of the Veterinary Services Act and other related legislation
Describe the protocol to be followed when inspections are held
Outline the basic provisions and implications of occupational and health and safety regulations
Describe how a basic risk assessment is undertaken

 

Module 2: Animal Health & Farm Work

MQF Level 3;

Number of Contact Hours – 40 Guided Learning Hours

Total Learning Hours – 200 hrs

Number of credits – 8 ECTS

This unit provides a solid foundation upon which the assistant veterinary technical officer can build to perform his/her duties appropriately in the line of work. It starts by providing an outline of the common husbandry and management procedures used by farm managers breeding various livestock species. This discussion will continue with an overview of the common animal diseases and conditions encountered on the farm. The second half of the unit will commence by providing the necessary skills for the officer to perform farm work appropriately and will include handling, body scoring and data collection. The last part of the unit will delve into the protocols followed for the taking of samples as required in the line of duty of the assistant veterinary technical officer.

 

Module 2 – Learning Outcomes
LO1 Describe basic husbandry and management procedures of livestock farms
LO2 Describe various common livestock diseases and conditions
LO3 Perform various animal-related tasks when inspecting a livestock farm
LO4 Use correct procedures to take and handle samples

 

Module 3: Report Writing

MQF Level 3;

Number of Contact Hours – 10 Guided Learning Hours

Total Learning Hours – 50 hrs

Number of credits – 2 ECTS

This unit provides learners with the skills necessary to write effective reports which are fit for intended purpose. The various aspects of report writing are discussed- the format to use and the compositional skills required to create and organize a report, the common vocabulary that need to be mastered to prepare the reports in the field of work and the grammar necessary to create sentences with correct syntax. The unit also helps learners to write better reports with the help of common IT software, by utilizing model reports and by knowing how to revise to report correctly.

 

Module 3 – Learning Outcomes
LO1 Write a report using the correct format
LO2 Use suitable vocabulary and legal terms when writing a report
LO3 Use correct syntax when writing a report
LO4 Summarize incident happenings in a succinct report

 

All learning outcomes mentioned above cover mandatory vocational skills. Hands on skills to perform such duties to the required industry standards are integrated within each learning outcome.
