Study Programme Description:
This award is made up of three separate modules each of which teaches various skills and competences required by someone working in the position of Assistant Veterinary Technical Officer to undertake their day-to-day duties in a professional manner. The different modules delve into various subjects ranging from the writing of reports to the foundations of veterinary services legislation, animal health, protocols followed by such officers on a livestock farm and health and safety topics.
Experts in the filed will deliver these units, ensuring that the necessary competences are passed for the learners to be able to perform their duties in an appropriate and correct manner.

This award consists of three modules with a summative assessment for each unit. The following are the learning outcomes for each unit.
Module 1: Principles of Animal Legislation and Health & Safety
MQF Level 3;
Number of contact hours – 30 Guided Learning Hours
Total Learning Hours – 125 hrs
Number of credits – 5 ECTS
| This unit provides the basis upon which the work of the assistant veterinary technical officer is based. It introduces and goes into detail on the legislations associated with veterinary services and livestock husbandry and slaughter and health and safety and explains how the officer needs to abide by such legislation in the line of duty. Furthermore, the unit explains the protocols that need to be followed for different inspections and in various scenarios encountered by these officers and how common difficult situations should be tackled. The unit ends with a discussion on how a basic risk assessment of a site is undertaken to prevent dangerous situations from arising. |

Module 2: Animal Health & Farm Work

| This unit provides a solid foundation upon which the assistant veterinary technical officer can build to perform his/her duties appropriately in the line of work. It starts by providing an outline of the common husbandry and management procedures used by farm managers breeding various livestock species. This discussion will continue with an overview of the common animal diseases and conditions encountered on the farm. The second half of the unit will commence by providing the necessary skills for the officer to perform farm work appropriately and will include handling, body scoring and data collection. The last part of the unit will delve into the protocols followed for the taking of samples as required in the line of duty of the assistant veterinary technical officer. |

| This unit provides learners with the skills necessary to write effective reports which are fit for intended purpose. The various aspects of report writing are discussed- the format to use and the compositional skills required to create and organize a report, the common vocabulary that need to be mastered to prepare the reports in the field of work and the grammar necessary to create sentences with correct syntax. The unit also helps learners to write better reports with the help of common IT software, by utilizing model reports and by knowing how to revise to report correctly. |
