Award in Basic Stone Heritage Skills

Course Description

The unit aims to give an introduction of the core skills and knowledge for the preservation and maintenance of heritage buildings. Learners will be introduced to traditional construction methods, historical materials, and the ethical principles behind heritage conservation. The unit focuses on practical, hands-on experience with traditional building techniques, as well as an understanding of the historical and cultural significance of built heritage.

Learners will gain knowledge on the identification of traditional building materials and techniques as well as different stone deterioration mechanisms to be able to recognize the most appropriate interventions. The unit will explore various cleaning techniques as well as lime mortar application while understanding key principles of heritage conservation, including how to respect original materials, use compatible methods and carry out minimal, reversible interventions.

By the end of this unit, learners will have a strong foundation in traditional trade skills and an appreciation for the cultural heritage buildings approaching them with care, respect and technical competence.
