Course Description

This course is intended for Learning Support Educators who wish to delve deeper into inclusive education concepts and theories to lead to better inclusive practices. Throughout, the course aims at addressing contemporary issues within local society to ensure an inclusive educational setting, guided by local curricular documents and policies. This course offers learners in depth understanding and hands on practice.

 

Programme Learning Outcomes

At the end of the programme the learner will be able to:

  1. Adapt learning to meet learners’ needs within the inclusive education sector.
  2. Create resources that meet different learning requirements of learners.
  3. Implement inclusive education policies and procedures within the learning environment.
  4. Reflect on and evaluate own inclusive practice within the learning environment.

 

Eligibility

Entry Requirements

  • be in possession of the Award in Inclusive Education, or a Certificate in Education for Learning Support Assistants (10 week course) or equivalent;

and

  • be in possession of the Certificate in Inclusive Education (20 week course) or equivalent;

and

  • be in possession of Matriculation or SEC passes at Grade 5 or better in English, Maltese and Maths OR an MCAST full Level 3 Diploma or higher

and

  • be in possession of the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent;

and

be in possession of passes in English, Maltese and Maths Proficiency Tests as approved by MCAST

 

 

Unit Title

  1. Facilitating Cognitive learning – ECTS 6‚  Contact hours‚   30

LO1: Apply concepts and theories to the various processes of cognitive learning and profound learning difficulties including gifted and talented learners and high ability learners

LO2: Determine ways to embrace all cognitive learning needs including gifted and talented learners

LO3: Develop skills to facilitate learning of students with cognitive learning needs

LO4: Apply strategies that support learners with different cognitive learning needs

 

  1. Understanding Physical & Psychological Diversity – ECTS6‚ Contact Hours‚   30  

LO1: Construct a wide understanding of physical and psychological diversity

LO2: Apply pedagogical tools and strategies to include learners with physical and psychological diversity

LO3: Address the needs of learners with sensory impairments and Learners with emotional and behavioral challenges through practical methods

LO4: Creating physically & psychologically inclusive practices for educational inclusive settings

 

  1. Creating Inclusive multicultural communities – ECTS 6‚ Contact Hours‚  30

LO1: Defining and determining bias in local communities to lead to sensitization

LO2: Creating a wider understanding of what constitutes a multicultural community

LO3: Fostering a multicultural inclusive culture in educational settings

LO4: Implementing hands on strategies for a multicultural learning environment

 

  1. Supporting the gender identity & sexuality of learners – ECTS 6‚  Contact Hours‚  30  

LO1: Discuss different gender identities and sexual orientations including sexual temporalities in society and the relevance to the educational setting

LO2: Identify different family structures and learners with LGBTIQ parents to include all learners within the educational setting

LO3: Apply inclusive practices that embraces different gender identities in society

LO4: Create a learning environment that allows a respectful but liberal identity expression

 

  1. The Practice Placement – ECTS 6‚ Contact Hours‚   30

LO1: Identify and carry out research according to the assigned learner’s requirements

LO2: Carry out hours within an inclusive educational setting implementing inclusive education practices

LO3: Create a professional portfolio that includes relevant documents

LO4: identify and carry out strategies that are relevant and address the learner’s needs
