Course Description
This course complements the ‘Introduction to Farriery (Tan-Nagħal)’ course and focuses on the practical aspects of farriery. It will delve into the basic welfare of the horses’ hooves, provide an overview of the hoof’s anatomy and discuss equine hoof care to then proceed with the students learning and subsequently undertaking tasks related to hoof trimming, cold and hot shoeing and basic ironwork related to farriery. Learners will get the opportunity to practice on live animals and in iron workshops. Bad work practises will be highlighted and examples of good practice discussed.
LO1 Outline the anatomy of a horse’s hoof.
LO2 Use the correct procedure to undertake tasks related to hoof trimming.
LO3 Follow right protocols to undertake tasks related to cold and hot shoeing.
LO4 Carry out basic ironwork tasks related to farriery.
