Course Description
This course provides learners with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles and key concepts of astrophysics. It is imperative to understand that this unit is aimed to be a basic unit. ‚ It explores the physical laws that govern celestial bodies and cosmic phenomena, from planetary motion to the life cycles of stars and the large-scale structure of the universe. Through a combination of theoretical content, historical context, and case studies, learners will develop a foundational understanding of how the universe works and how we observe and interpret it.
The unit also introduces learners to the tools and techniques used in modern astrophysical research, including telescopes, spectroscopy, and space probes. Current areas of active investigation, such as exoplanets, high-energy phenomena, dark matter, and astrobiology, will also be examined to highlight the evolving nature of astrophysical science.
This unit is suitable for learners with a general interest in astronomy and physics, and it provides a strong foundation for further study or careers in science education, research, or space-related industries.
Learning Outcomes
LO1‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ Explain the key physical principles as they apply to astrophysical systems.
LO2‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ Describe the life cycle of stars, including formation, main sequence evolution
LO3‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ Outline how observational data from telescopes and space missions is analysed to interpret celestial phenomena.
LO4‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ ‚ Describe basic cosmological concepts, including the expansion of the universe, dark matter, its evidence and significance in the universe.
