This is a 40 hour course spread over 5 days.
This course on the ‘Operational use of ECDIS’ is intended to provide the knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS and electronic charts to the thorough extent needed to safely navigate ships whose primary means of navigation is ECDIS. This course emphasizes both the application and the learning of ECDIS in a variety of underway contexts.
This course is designed to meet the STCW requirements in the use of ECDIS
It should be understood that this is a generic course which requires a structured and complementary on-board ship specific ECDIS familiarization for each shipboard ECDIS system on which the navigation officer serves.
During this course candidates will cover the following:
Participants undertaking this course are required to have accomplished some formal instruction in Terrestrial Navigation, have, as a minimum, some familiarization with visual navigation, have accomplished a period of supervised Bridge watchkeeping duties, and have prior completion of basic Radar/ ARPA course (STCW NARAS Operational Course Certificate).
In general, Deck Cadets following the course leading to the STCW Certificate of Competency as ‘Officer in charge of Navigational Watch on Ships of 500 GT or more’, Regulation II/1, normally satisfy these entry requirements.
