Description

The course is designed for those eager to improve their knowledge and practical skills in wood working either to improve on what they learned during the Wood – Introduction course or to improve what they are practicing at the place of work during employment. The course is modelled on Learning by doing and essential technology on woods, hand and power tools, and safety forms an integral part of the course.

Unit One – Types of woods, adhesives & Abrasives, Fittings and Accessories

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe different types of common wood and their uses;
  • Identify different types of adhesives and their uses;
  • Identify different types of abrasives and their uses;
  • Describe different types of fittings and their uses for a specific job

Unit Two – Marking and Setting out to work with Hand and Power Tools

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify hand help power tools and their relative uses;
  • Use hand held power tools in a safe and correct environment;
  • Maintain and store hand held and power tools in a safe and correct manner;
  • Mark and set out basic woodworking tasks;

Unit Three – Marking and Setting Out to Work with Industrial Wood Working Machinery

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify industrial woodworking machinery and their relative uses;
  • Use industrial woodworking machinery in a safe and correct environment;
  • Maintain industrial woodworking machinery in a safe and correct manner;
  • Mark, set out and produce a cutting procedure for specific woodworking machines;

Eligibility Criteria

Can handle hand tools as covered in the MCAST Wood Introductory. Measure and draw common shapes.

Ready to work in wood workshop environment with unavoidable wood working dust.
