1.Identify various types of gypsum boards, finishing materials, fasteners and adhesives for a given task
Gypsum boards: Gypsum backing boards and core boards, Exterior Gypsum , Soffit board, gypsum ceiling board, type X gypsum board, water resistant gypsum board;
- drying type joint compound; setting type joint compound, skim coat, dry wall primer, joint tape, paper tape, fibreglass tape;
- variety of metal furring;
2.Define the recommended five levels of finish established and agreed by the sector organisations
- Unfinished level – level zero;
- Level 1 – with all joints and interior angles taped;
- Level 2 – all joints and interior angles taped and with a coat of compound applied;
- Level 3 – as in level two with an additional coat;
- Level 4 – as in level 2 with two additional coat;
- level 5 – with a thin skim finish coat applied to the entire surface;
3.Follow health and safety practices to control job site contaminants and housekeeping
- Protection of porous building materials from moisture;
- the use of vacumns;
- wetting agents to suppress dust;
- measures to control volatile organic compounds;
- importance of continuous ventilation
4.Read and interpret technical drawings and instructions indicating specific applications
- The surface layer of interior walls;
- a base for ceramic, plastic and metal tiles;
- exterior sheating and soffits;
- elevator and other shaft enclosures;
- area separation fire walls between occupancies;
- fire resistant layer over structural elements;
- recommended thicknesses for specific applications;
- gypsum boards edge types: rounded, tapered, bevelled, square, tongue and groove
5.Demonstrate good workmanship to prepare and install single-ply and multi-ply applications with the necessary furring channel and runners installed.
- Cutting and fitting procedures,
- using the utility knife to score board,
- snapping scored board,
- nailing,
- screwing,
- furring with wood,
- furring with steel profiles,
- measuring, levelling and aligning tools
Entry Requirements
These are required to be able to enroll in the course.
- Over 18 years old;
- Has a Medical Certificate that shows the person is fit to work in a construction site environment
