This short programme is intended to certify personnel that handle refrigerants from system of less than 3 kg or if hermetically sealed, less than 6kg. The main intensions is to cover the minimum requirements for the category three certification referred to in article 5(1) of Regulation (EC) No 842/ 2006 in relation to stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment containing certain fluorinated greenhouse gases. The theoretical and practical demonstrations in this programme are intended to remind practitioners of the approved ‘good practices’ that meets the above mentioned regulation when working with refrigerants.

This is a 25 hrs of guided learning course. Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

Lessons are held as indicated on the prospectus and website.

This unit covers the activities provided in point B of Article 2(1): Recovery of Refrigerant in relation to Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and heat pump equiment containing less than 3 kg, or if hermetically sealed systems less that 6 of fluorinatioed greenhouse gases.

  • Environmental impact of Refrigerants and corresponding environmental regualtions

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Pre Requisites

Applicants should be well versed in Theory and Practice in line with EU Commission Regulation (EC) no. 303/2008.

Theoretic knowledge is normally covered by Vocational Courses in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning at MQF level 3, however if the applicant does not have a strong Theoretic knowledge, it is strongly recommended that they follow an HVAC course provided by MCAST.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be at least 21 years of age

Practical Experience – Applicants should have a minimum of three years work experience in the areas of Refrigeration & / or Air-Conditioning. The experience stated must be attested by a person who is licenced at least at Category 2 in Stationery Refrigeration Systems. A Copy of the Licence will need to be presented along with the letter of Reference.

Letters of reference issued by Companies such as Importers or Service Providers specialised or mainly dealing in Refrigeration and / or Air-Conditioning will also be accepted. MCAST reserves the right to carry out independent verification of the Letters of Reference presented by applicants directly with the Persons and / or Companies endorsing these letters of Reference.

Note: Although no evidence of Theoretic knowledge is required, it is the sole responsibility of the applicant to ensure that own knowledge is sufficient to attempt the three hour Theory Assessment which determines the Category at which the applicant will then perform a 12-hour practical test (split over two sessions of 6 hours each).

Persons who lack Theory or Practice in the fields of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning are strongly advised to complete courses in HVAC Theory, or in HVAC Practice, or in both HVAC Theory and Practice, BEFORE attempting this Assessment Course which determines the Category at which a person can be Licenced formally through the Local Authorities.

Applicants will need to use their own personal protective equipment, clothing and Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning tools for their Practical Tests. Specialised equipment such as Vacuum Pumps, Refrigerants and Oxy-Acetylene Welding will be provided by MCAST. All the other tools will need to be supplied by the applicant.

Certificates are only issued to applicants who are successful in one of the four categories.
