Award in Basic Haircutting Techniques

This short course offers individuals interested in basic cutting techniques to understand the theory and hands on behind such practices. Learners will be able to maintain and use basic cutting techniques correctly. This will be based on a correct consultation with the client and also the correct use of equipment keeping in mind health and safety procedures. This course is mainly intended for those students following the City and Guilds Diploma in Hairdressing and also for those hairdressers who would like to refresh their skills.

This is a 20 hr guided learning course.  Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

Lessons are held as indicated on the prospectus and website.

Course will include;

Learning Outcome 1; Identify clients’ needs through a consultation process

Unit Content

• Client consultation requirements  for cutting services
• Factors that affect or influence the cut
• The basic cutting techniques.

Learning Outcome 2; Use tools and equipment utilized for haircutting services

Unit Content

• Scissors
• Different types of combs
• Sectioning clips
• Cutting gown

Learning Outcome 3; Perform skillfully four cutting techniques for wet and dry hair

Unit Content

• Club-cutting
• Free hand cutting
• Scissors over comb
• TexturizingDiscussion, explaining different angles and evaluations

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Entry Requirement:

• Students must be 16 years of age.

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

• An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

• An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria and also choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.
• Students who opt not to sit for the assessment or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded the MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.

Students should provide their own mannequin head for the duration of the course.
