Description

Students will be able to understand the fundamentals of video editing, and how editing can make or break a video or film project. Students will be taught the fundamentals of Adobe Premiere Pro, which is the key Adobe software used for video editing.

This is a 24 hr guided learning course. Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

Lessons are held as indicated on the prospectus and website.

Learning Outcome 1; Describe and elaborate on video editing fundamentals with regards to the video production process, the history of film, and video editing techniques.

Unit Content

• Introduction to Video Production field: Pre Production, Production, Post Production
• Video Editing History: Basic History of film (Lumiere, Melies, Porter, Griffith)
• Filming / Editing Techniques: shots, scenes, sequences / cuts / cross cutting / transitions / jump cut / time compression / composition, Cross cutting / cut aways / continuity
• Video Editing Systems History: Linear / Non linear editing / Home editing software

Learning Outcome 2; Demonstrate technical qualities of technical video language

Unit Content

• Technical elements of Video Editing: Resolution, Frame rate, Screen Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect ratio, Fields / Progressive
• Basics of Adobe Premiere: Different uses of Adobe Premiere. Introduction to the work environment in Premiere, the timeline, tools, basic transitions/effects, text, keyframing, importing and exporting, etc

Learning Outcome 3; Edit a short clip of 1 minute using basic editing techniques and abiding to video editing fundamentals

Unit Content

• Create a 1 minute clip: Filming of footage using a simple domestic digital camera or using given / downloaded footage, and editing it on premiere pro in class.
• Short Evaluation: A short written evaluation of your production, justifying your decisions taken in the final edit, elaborated in outcome 1 and 2.

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Pre-requisites:

• Digital Domestic Camera (DSLR preferred) with the ability to shoot video (whatever the quality)
• Home computer (PC or MAC) with the minimum specifications to edit video.
• The course is delivered through the use of MAC, therefore good knowledge of the MAC system is recommended.

Entry Requirements:

• Very Good everyday computer skills are obligatory. ECDL is preferred but not required.

 

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

  • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

  • An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria and also choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.

  • Students who opt not to sit for the assessment or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded the MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.

Students should possess a camera with the ability to shoot video (whatever the quality) and a home computer (PC or MAC) with the minimum specifications to edit SD or HD video.
