Description

This unit is intended to provide the learner with a high level of information regarding architectural drafting skills while producing detailed and annotated drawings related to residential and light commercial buildings in line with local building regulations and sanitary laws.

The student is expected to present 90% of the drawings drawn in class at the end of this unit. Also, each student must present a project of his / her own design and labour consisting of a set of drawings as agreed upon with the lecturer.

This project must reflect a high standard of technical knowledge in building construction, sanitary laws, regulations and architectural drawing techniques.

This is a 60 hrs of guided learning course.  Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

Learning Outcome 1:  Describe the use of various projection techniques in construction drawings

Unit Content

  • 2D and 3D drawings, surveying drawings, site plans, concept drawings, design drawings, production drawings, civil engineering drawings, structural drawings, bending schedules, component drawings, building services drawings, fabrication drawings.

Learning Outcome 2:  Produce a comprehensive range of architectural graphical detailing related to residential and   light commercial buildings

  • Foundations, Walls, Roofs, Openings, Beams, Columns, Stairs, Floors

Learning Outcome 3:  Demonstrate effective architectural drafting skills through the production of different forms of drawings

Unit Content

  • Plans, Elevations, Sections, Projection, developments, Sketches, Working Drawings, Door and Window Schedules
  • One point ,two point perspectives
  • Shadows of plans, elevations and of building over other
  • R.C. details for structural members c/w bar bending schedules
  • Sections through roads showing existing and proposed levels
  • Details for a light steel structure with a reinforced concrete roof
  • Constructional Details regarding building construction

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Pre-requisites;

  • Functional Skills in the English Language

Entry Requirements:

  • Completed Compulsory Education;  Has completed the course Architectural Drafting Principles

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

  • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

  • An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria AND ALSO choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.
  • Students who opt not to sit for the assessment/s or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded an MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.

There are no additional costs or special materials/equipment to bring.
