Description

This course is designed to provide learners with the basic knowledge, understanding and skills required to produce simple construction drawings using manual drawing techniques.

The course is based on a lot of construction drawing exercises given in class. Students will also be introduced to local building legislation through local examples.

This is a 60 hr guided learning course.  Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

Lessons are held as indicated on the prospectus and website.

Learning Outcome 1:  Describe a wide range of equipment, media and techniques currently used on the production of architectural graphical information

Unit Content

  • Drawing office procedures; overview about the equipment, media and projections techniques in common use.
  • Scales; arches; arch symbols

Learning Outcome 2:  Interpret a variety of sources of architectural graphical information and construction drawing standards

Unit Content

  • Bungalow details – plan/ elevation/ sections
  • Computation of stairs and type of stairs
  • Two Storey House – plan/ elevation/ section
  • Reinforced concrete slab details using steel fabric
  • Door/ window schedules
  • Cross references to drawings colour code for plans showing demolition of part building and new erection.
  • Drainage system – rain water system – Hot and fresh water supply
  • d.p.c – formation – road levels
  • R.C details/ column – base – beams

Learning Outcome 3: Apply construction drawing standards and conventions to produce working drawings

  • Orthographic projection; sketches and construction drawings: plans, elevations, sections, details

The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:

Pre-requisites;          

  • Completed Compulsory Education

Entry Requirements;

  • Functional Skills in the English Language

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

  • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

  • An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria AND ALSO choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.
  • Students who opt not to sit for the assessment/s or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded an MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.

There are no additional costs or special materials/equipment to bring.
